I am a colic baby survivor. I am not a doctor, and I don’t profess to play one on the Internet. My expertise is life experience. The following testimony is absolutely true. I share it with you with the hope that the various colic remedies that worked for my husband and I night after night will work for you as well.
It all started for us about a few weeks after bringing our precious baby home. We were brand-new parents. Never even changed a diaper. And I was recovering from a c-section.
Everything was fine…at first.
She slept a lot the first two weeks. So, imagine our horror, when one evening, around 5 or 6, she started screaming her head off.
Is she wet? No. Is she hungry? Doesn’t seem like it. Then what in the world?
I did what every good parent does when they have a baby question…I called my mom.
Try rocking her. Try walking with her. Give her Simethicone drops.
Simethiwhat? Had never even heard of that.
Finally, my mom said, “I don’t know what to tell you…let her cry it out.”
Let her cry it out.
Huh? Cry it out. You don’t understand…this isn’t any ordinary crying. It’s ear-piercing shrieking. Four solid hours of it. Her face was as red as tomato paste, and she shook her fists at us like she was Rocky.
But finally, around 10 or so, it subsided. She fell asleep. By the next morning, she was fine…
…until 5 or 6 that evening.
And so the cycle went. I sought out all kinds of advice. Everybody gave their spin on the situation.
“Oh, it’s gas, give her simethicone drops.”
“Oh, she’s hungry, feed her more often.”
“Maybe she’s teething, give her a frozen waffle.”
A frozen waffle? At two weeks? I don’t think so. No one told me that it was probably colic. Thinking there was something horribly wrong, I called the doctor to get her in immediately. Color me surprised when my doctor smiled at me knowingly and said:
Your daughter has colic.
I wasn’t even sure I knew what that meant. So, I studied the subject of colic. And though trial and error, came up with some theories of my own and remedies that totally worked for us.
With this site, I am happy to share my experience, and what I discovered, in hopes that you too can soothe your baby and console yourself through this trying and crazy stage of your baby’s life 🙂
